Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?

Invisalign is a popular type of orthodontic treatment because of its discretion and enhanced comfort. But is it as good as braces?

If you are dealing with a particularly difficult type of tooth misalignment, like an overbite, you’re likely wondering if Invisalign is the right solution for you. The short answer is that it depends.

Check out this short guide to learn more.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner therapy that uses a set of plastic trays to slowly reposition the teeth. Your trays will be custom-made based on a scan and map of your tooth realignment to get accurate results.

When you wear your aligners, they will apply pressure to your teeth. In a way, this is similar to braces, which are also tightened to create pressure and move your teeth to a more optimal position.

How Does Invisalign Fix Overbites?

There are two main types of overbites:

  • Dental: The appearance of the overbite is created by the position of the teeth.
  • Skeletal: The overbite is a result of jawbone misalignment.

Invisalign can successfully address many cases of dental overbites. As you’re wearing the aligners, they will move your teeth until the appearance of the overbite disappears.

Unfortunately, Invisalign does not affect the jawbone, so patients with skeletal overbites are not good candidates for this clear aligner therapy. In most cases, skeletal overbites will need braces and even jaw therapy to be successfully corrected.

How Can You Know If Invisalign Is Right for You?

Invisalign is a fantastic way to fix most overbites, but its abilities are limited. If you have a minor to moderate case, you may be able to get this type of treatment. The use of Invisalign attachments, such as rubber bands and buttons, can also help make the treatment more effective for particularly difficult overbites.

But you should know that severe cases of dental overbites may still require braces simply because they would require more pressure to correct, which Invisalign cannot offer.

Still, you won’t know if Invisalign is right for you until you speak to a specialist about your options. A dentist will analyze your overbite and scan your teeth and jaw to determine the severity of your condition. In the case of Invisalign, they will also assess your overall oral health to determine if you’re a good candidate for this type of therapy.
