Frequently asked questions

1

What are the Qualifications For a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontics is a dental specialty that requires additional training beyond a four-year dental degree (DMD or DDS). After graduating with a dental degree, a prosthodontist must enter an accredited prosthodontics residency program. These typically last 3 years. In this program, the prosthodontist will gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in the latest developments in prosthodontics. This specialty focuses on repairing damaged teeth and restoring missing teeth.  After 3 years, the residency is complete, but the prosthodontist must still pass several exams before being accepted as a board-certified prosthodontist. Only after doing so can they call themselves a prosthodontist, and begin practicing on patients.

What Makes A Prosthodontist Different From A Dentist?

Both prosthodontists and general dentists can replace missing teeth. It’s common for general dentists to offer treatments like dental implants, crowns, dentures, and so on. But that doesn’t mean that they are the same. The difference is that general dentists provide restorative care along with lots of other services. As the name implies, they’re generalists. Prosthodontists are not. They don’t usually clean teeth, treat gum disease, or provide Invisalign treatment. Instead, they focus on repairing and restoring damaged or lost teeth, day in and day out. Not only do they have more education in this field, but they have a lot more expertise in the day-to-day treatment of these conditions. That means they can provide better overall results. Restoring damaged and missing teeth is their specialty!

What are prosthodontic services?

Prosthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on the restoration and replacement of teeth to improve both aesthetics and function. Common prosthodontic services include dental crowns, bridges, complete and partial dentures, and implant-supported restorations. The goal is not just to enhance your smile, but also to restore oral health and bite alignment. At White Dental Spa in Dallas, Dr. E-Jan Tung and Dr. Quinn Liu offer advanced prosthodontic treatments tailored to each patient's unique needs. Whether you're missing one tooth or require full-mouth reconstruction, prosthodontic care addresses complex cases involving damaged teeth, traumatic injury, or congenital oral structures. With a deep commitment to quality and precision, prosthodontic services balance cutting-edge dental technology and detailed aesthetic care. Services are also designed to be long-lasting, often using materials like porcelain or zirconia that mimic the translucency and strength of natural teeth.
4

How much does prosthodontics cost?

The cost of prosthodontics varies widely depending on the type of treatment, the complexity of your case, and the materials used. For example, a single dental crown to replace just one tooth may only be a couple thousand dollars, while a full set of implant-supported dentures will be much more costly. Factors such as lab fees, custom designs, and the use of premium materials can all influence pricing. Dr. Tung and Dr. Liu at White Dental Spa provide individualized treatment plans and transparent pricing after a comprehensive exam. Because prosthodontic care often involves multiple steps and advanced techniques, it’s common to work through a phased approach that fits both your treatment timeline and budget. While more extensive treatments can seem costly upfront, many patients find the functional, cosmetic, and long-term benefits of prosthodontics in Dallas well worth the investment. Flexible financing options may also be available to help you manage the investment in your oral health.

Are prosthodontics the same as implants?

Prosthodontics and dental implants are related, but they are not the same. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with designing and placing various types of prosthetic dental restorations to replace missing or damaged teeth. Dental implants, on the other hand, are one form of tooth replacement: specifically, titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots. Due to their high performance, long lifespan, and natural appearance, dental implants are often used as part of a broader prosthodontic plan. For example, a prosthodontist may use implants to anchor a crown, a bridge, or even a full set of dentures. Prosthodontists are trained to assess your oral structure and recommend whether implants, traditional bridges, or removable dentures are best for your situation. Dr. Tung and Dr. Liu integrate implant dentistry into their prosthodontic treatments, offering comprehensive solutions for patients in Highland Park, Uptown, and surrounding Dallas neighborhoods. Their expertise ensures that all replacement options (from implants to full-arch restorations) are seamlessly incorporated into your treatment plan.

What is the difference between fixed prosthodontics and removable prosthodontics?

The primary difference lies in whether the dental prosthesis can be removed by the patient or not. Fixed prosthodontics refers to restorations that are securely attached to teeth or implants and cannot be taken out. This includes crowns, bridges, and implant-supported restorations. These are ideal for patients looking for a more permanent, natural-feeling solution. Removable prosthodontics, on the other hand, includes dentures and partial dentures that can be taken out for cleaning and maintenance. These are typically recommended for patients who are missing multiple teeth and may not yet be ready for implant-supported options due to bone loss or financial concerns. At White Dental Spa, Dr. Tung and Dr. Liu will evaluate your dental health, lifestyle preferences, and long-term goals to recommend the best type of prosthodontic solution. Whether you're in Oaklawn, Turtle Creek, or elsewhere nearby, you’ll receive treatment that's designed with both function and appearance in mind.
