Wondering if you should choose Lumineers or traditional porcelain veneers? You may be confused about the differences between the two. In this blog post from White Dental Spa, we’ll discuss how Lumineers and veneers are different, and help you understand which treatment might be right for you. Read on and learn more.
Veneers and Lumineers serve the same purpose. Just like veneers, Lumineers are thin, tooth-shaped shells made out of a special, durable porcelain material. They fit over the front surfaces of your teeth, covering up a variety of cosmetic flaws like chips, stains, gaps between teeth, uneven and misshapen teeth, and more. The difference is that Lumineers are thinner. A lot thinner. Traditional veneers are usually about 0.5mm thick, and can be thicker than that. In comparison, Lumineers are about 0.2mm thick, which is the same thickness as a contact lens.
Now that you know how Lumineers differ from veneers, you may be wondering which treatment is right for you. To help you decide, let’s discuss the pros and cons of Lumineers, starting with the benefits of this treatment.- No drilling or numbing – Because Lumineers are so thin, there’s no need to drill your teeth and remove enamel during your preparation treatment, unlike with traditional veneers. If you have dental anxiety or just want a more comfortable treatment, this is a big benefit.- Reversible treatment – Since minimal enamel is removed during the preparation process, Lumineers are reversible. If you ever change your mind, you can have them removed. In practice, it’s extremely rare for this to happen, since most people love how their Lumineers look, but some patients still prefer the idea of being able to reverse their cosmetic treatment, if desired.- Natural appearance – Lumineers look and feel really natural, since they are very thin and are designed to blend in seamlessly with your other teeth. Your smile will look great, and the durability and stain resistance of Lumineers will ensure they last a long time. However, Lumineers may not be right for everyone. Let’s look at a few drawbacks of getting treatment with Lumineers. - Not suitable for all patients – For example, since Lumineers are so thin, they are not usually the best choice for severe stains. The thinner porcelain will not be able to hide these stains effectively.- Higher cost – Lumineers are usually more expensive than veneers, which is definitely something to keep in mind when choosing between these two cosmetic treatments.- May still require prep in some cases – While Lumineers require minimal prep, there are some cases where some tooth enamel must be removed, particularly when treating crooked or crowded teeth.
